“I am not what has happened to me. I am what I choose to become”

Even on our darkest days Damien reminds me why we can survive this. Why we can laugh, and live despite the despair that can overtake our souls some days. When Damien was diagnosed at the age of 14 with Neurofibromatosis type 2, Paul and I felt the stability of our day to day life fall apart immediately. Everything I knew about this disease flashed before my eyes, and became a very painful reality. Most of all I considered deeply the fact that his life would never be the same again. Fast forward to the present I can’t believe what has already happened in the past four years. Our daughter Ali was also diagnosed with the disease, and between the 2 of them they have had 3 brain surgeries as well one spinal surgery. All of them to remove tumors that ultimately become life threatening, and cause nerve damage throughout the body. The hallmark for NF2 is the tumors that rest on the acoustic nerve. They most often cause deafness as there is no cure for this disease. Some days honestly it can feel like there isn’t a cure for a broken heart. As a mom we tend to carry the worries of our children to our very core. As I mentioned earlier Damien reminds me why we can survive this..for so many reasons. Even though he is on borrowed time before he goes deaf he still puts on the smile and humor that brings us back to life. Despite regular chemo treatments to keep his brain tumor stable, he reminds me that hope DOES lie in a simple trip to get some fried chicken. I am so honored to have these Navas, and to be theirs. We created the D.A.N (Damien Antonio Nava) tournament to find a way to honor the light that is our boy. This event also gives us a chance to raise funds, and awareness. Please know that in whatever way you give we will give back tenfold to support others that are fighting in this journey, and in life. Thank you for fighting with us by supporting the D.A.N. Some of you have been coming every year. Thank you for helping us to feel the strength in numbers. I will never lose a single measure of gratitude for your kindness.~ Leslie “Mama” Nava
